This phenomenon is not limited to Yahoo Answers either. Lots of signs and notes in China use "English" that looks like it's been copied straight from an automatic translation.
Do these people actually believe that automatic translations work?!|||Some people actually do. However, they are ignorant and extremely stupid and it's sad that they'd even attempt to answer a translation question when they have no knowledge of the language. I usually deal in Chinese, French, German and English Grammar questions in languages. When I do answer these questions, I always double-check my answer and only attempt to answer questions at a level that I can deal with. Online translators never work because they take no context into account which is what language is all about. How are they meant to know the difference between 'fly' the verb and 'fly' the noun? Always use a human and don't be lazy! Sadly, I think few will look at your question and even fewer the answers here.|||do u mean like,when the translators just make boxes?|||haha...yeah apparently
but automatic translations are helpful when you know NOTHING from the language and are just trying to get an idea of what is said.|||They do work, just not that well. You have to translate it, then interpret what it gives you. For one word it's perfectly accurate. Or, if you're translating something you don't know into a language you do know, it works, because you can interpret it.|||They work but only up to a point are not of course a substitute for human translation.We can all look up foreign words in a dictionary but if you speak a foreign language you don't just translate one word at a time.There is syntax grammar and idiom to take account of.A robot translator may be able to give you the gist but human intervention cannot be circumvented.
If you are totally bored one night try putting some English into a robot tranlslator to produce say Polish or whatever THen reverse the process and see how accurate or hilarious the result is.|||Unfortunately, I think some people really don't know. They've never stopped to think about whether or not you can just take words from one language and substitute them with words from another... To them, translation is just changing the words.
I'm a professional translator and I've had to redo entire texts because the previous version had been translated online.
All you'd have to do is take a chunk of text from another language and plug it in to see how it looks in your language; I mean, you should have a small doubt that perhaps this wouldn't work that well. Otherwise, why would there be people working as translators?!?|||i know they don't.
i know my language skills aren't great, but i've noticed tranlators mess up grammar 1/2 the time and almost always mix up homophones. and if it's not perfectly spelled, the tranlator won't get it.
i never sugest using one, and i use them to check my spelling, and as a dictionary for a words i'm not sure on(and then i use logic for that too)|||The answer must be yes.
A lot of people do use them and cite them in Yahoo answers.
They can't all be liars.
