How do you say "stay safe" in French?
In the sense that... someone is about to do something potentially dangerous, and you want to tell them to keep themselves safe and not get hurt. It's kind of a set phrase in English so I wasn't sure if translating it directly would be correct.
Please no Google Translations!
BQ: How do you say "It means..." As if you're trying to explain to someone the meaning of a word/phrase.|||Real French expressions, which you'll hear in lots of movies are...
"Fait Gaffe..."

Although the answers offered by another person answering are also good...

Can be best translated as:
"Ceci/Cela veut dire..."
You can use "ça veut dire..." aussi.
And depending on context, you can say:
"Ceci/Cela/ça s'explique ansi..."|||1) Soit prudent
2) Fait attention à toi

Does anyone know of any good WELSH translation sites?

Why do people think it's okay to answer translation questions by just pasting from Google Translate?
I have some news for people; Google Translate may have improved but it is /still not accurate/.
For example, I type this out, with it set to English-German;
"I will send the letter to you tomorrow."
This comes out;
"Ich schicke den Brief an dich morgen."
However, the word order and construction is wrong. It should be;
"Morgen schicke ich dir den Brief."|||I agree! I know Japanese (to an intermediate extent, I'm taking the JLPT 2kyuu this December) and Google's translations for Japanese are exceptionally horrible too! It really makes me furious when people use Google Translate when the user has specifically said "No online translators" and says "Don't worry, I'm a native speaker". I see people do that all the time D:%26lt;
The really horrible thing about that is someone might try to use that translation to communicate to somebody and look like an idiot... and for what? They'd deceive somebody and possibly get them in an awkward situation for some points? Despicable!
To give another example of Google's horrible grammatical garbage;
"I will send the letter to you tomorrow."
This comes out;
私はあなたに手紙を明日送信されます。
It should be;
明日あなたに手紙を送るつもりです。|||I'm bilingual and I will say it works quite well, in many cases. I guess it depends on which language. It's not perfect, but simple sentence constructions are about 80% correct in google translate
Also, you have to understand that when you put a sentence in, it should be a simple sentence. The other biggest problem that I see happening in Google Translate is that you have to make sure that you type the words from the ORIGINAL language correctly. You would be surprised how often people put mistakes for Google to translate.
It's not the same as a regular translator, of course not. It's not reliable, but for simple questions, when no one is around, it works okay.

Google and other translators don't conjugate or put the words in the right tense. You could put only one word in and it would MAYBE be correct. However, if you were to put a whole paragraph in a translator, I guarantee that it would be wrong, garbage, and a total waste of time.|||I have no idea. Especially when it is obvious (like when they are English speakers and they translate into English) that the translation is complete garbage.
I also don't understand why people will copy and paste 500-1000 words out of a Wikipedia article. How's my translation of this Japanese sentence?
今までは卑怯にも身長差で遅れをとったが...
"Until now, besides unfairness, I was falling behind because of the difference in height ..."
Please no Google translations|||I believe the asker wants us to review the correctness of his translation from Japanese to English, not the other way round.
I think his translation is correct except for the 卑怯にも part. I don't think "besides unfairness" is the right translation.
The difficult part is how to translate 卑怯にも。 「~にも」 in 「卑怯にも」 means
「???なことだが」, or "as indeed...".
The sentence therefore can be rewritten as: 今までは、卑怯なことだが、身長差で遅れをとったが...
The author of the original Japanese sentence is blaming the unfairness of his falling behind because others took advantage of their superior height.
Thus, my translation would be:
"Until now, as indeed it was unfair, I fell behind because of the difference in height..."|||Frankly speaking, your translation sounds natural, but doesn't make sense.
”Until now" "今までは" is OK.
"besides ..." means "...に加えて"
"unfairness" means "不公平"
"fall behind" "遅れをとる is OK.
"because of ..." means "...のせいで"
"the difference in height" "身長差" is OK.
Overall,
今までは,不公平に加えて,身長差のせいで
遅れをとっていました...
Only from this sentence, I don't guess what the unfairness means concretely.
I said something cruel above, but I can tell how hard you're learning Japanese.
Japanese is difficult, especially the usage of "助詞" like "で"
Certainly "because of ..." can be sometimes translated as "...で,"
but "身長差で" sounds like "fall behind someone in terms of the difference in height."
For Japanese people, the usage of prepositions like "in""on""for" is very difficult.
Good luck!|||I understood it as "though unfair,..."

A question about translating english words into Spanish on the Google translator?
Sorry if what I say doesn't make sense, but lets say that you type in the sentence "Are you afraid, little sister?" in English
the Spanish translation is "驴Tienes miedo, hermanita?"
is this what a Spanish speaker would say in real life? Or does it not make sense? Is it just translating each word individually?
also, if you're writing a story and you want your character to say something in Spanish, when they usually speak English, would it be okay to use the Google translator to get the Spanish sentences?|||In this particular case, it does make sense and some people would actually say that. But most of the time online translators are unreliable as they translate things literally, word for word, and many times don't even make sense. So I would not trust any online translators, and many people avoid them.|||'Yo' is right.
You got the correct translation but it doesn't often happen. Translators on line suck!!!!

Why do people always say to use Google Translate?
I always see people here telling people to use Google Translate. Why? Google Translate (and all other web translators) SUCK, and you have pretty much a 0% chance of getting an accurate translation. People are posting here because they want a *person* to translate, not some machine that doesn't understand context.|||Google Translate is recommended because it's probably the most used translator. Why does everyone ask for translations in Languages section?
Should not everyone go to basic %26amp; free language translation sites like Google Translate and BabelFist Altavista before opening question topics for basic sentence translations?

http://babelfish.altavista.com/|||they might think its unreliable and prefer to go to where they know the native speakers will answer them.|||Because automated translators don't work. Simple as that, really. After the third time you get back utter nonsense from something that was supposed to be a "basic sentence translation", you pretty much give up on the machines, and go someplace you can ask humans. For free.
A better question is, why does this bother you?|||Google and Babblefish are not reliable translators. In languages like Spanish and French they often make mistakes. In languages like Korean and Japanese, they create a whole lot of nonsense! Those translators are only good for one-word translations, or if you just want to get the gist of something. If you really want to know what something says, especially in languages that differ from English, you need to look elsewhere, and this is a great place to find people who speak a lot of languages.
Also, many languages are not even on the Google and Babblefish translators.

Need CORRECT translation of these lyrics from English to Italian please?
hi I am American and my male friend and I are trying to find the correct English to Italian translation of a phrase for a pendant he wants inscribed for his Italian girlfriend as a Christmas gift. The lyric is from her favorite song "use somebody" by kings of leon. What's the word for word translation into Italian? Thank you.

How can I copy and paste contents of a scanned document into Google translator. Please!!!!?
I am trying to translate documents from Danish into English. I know Google has a translator, but it requires the text to be copied and pasted into their translation box. The problem is that I am scanning these documents into the computer, and when I open the document to edit it, it doesn't give me the ability to copy and paste, so that I can translate various parts of the document. Anyone have a solution to my problem? Any help would be graciously appreciated.|||You need to use some OCR - Optical Character Recognition - tools to edit your scanned images. There are plenty available in internet.

This eliminates your ability to edit the test. You could try using the OCR software that came with your scanner. It can make an editable copy of the text, but OCR isn't perfect. It does not handle lines or layouts very well. Good Luck.

What perfect language translations sites are there?
i'm going to try to make this short, when i was is 6th grade i had to choose a foreign language to study for the next year and i always wanted to take german but there wasn't that option in school! so i took spanish but i don't like it. and i already speak french fluently. I'm stuck with spanish still being a 9th grader. anyway i have to translate a text from english to german and google translations are NO GOOD, i know it. it has loads of mistakes. does anyone know good sites that can translate correctly from one language to another, you know something really reliable, if you're german and you know a translation site that does it correctly tell me!
thanks!|||Unfortunately you're not going to find a perfect web translator; languages are too complex to be translated properly by a computer program. Google has one of the better translators out there, but even that is riddled with errors. You're better off translating it on your own and then coming here for feedback.|||No site like that exists. Things can't always be translated word for word/phrase for phrase (most translators have certain phrases in their, like "ama de casa," which literally means "love of the house," actually translates to "housewife.") However, entire sentences cannot be perfectly translated electronically. Besides phrases, there are also differences in grammar, and it just can't be done. A computer works too systematically, while the mind works in the abstract, and languages are abstract, so there are no perfect translators.

Why doesn't translation appear when I hover over words in the Google results page?
The Google translation usually appears in a small box when I hover over a word in any page on the internet except the Google search results page! This change occurred suddenly without me downloading or changing anything; not that I know of (Although I just downloaded a new version of Google toolbar hoping this feature will be working again on this particular page but to no avail). The translation in the small box used to appear before on the Google search results page, now it doesn't anymore. Please help me restore this feature on the search results page of Google! It's a Google toolbar option!|||You have to enable it again from the options menu.
Do some people honestly believe that automatic translations actually work??
An alarming number of people use online translators to answer translation requests on Yahoo Answers. Just now, I even saw an answer which stated "you could just have used Google Translations or something; that's an easier way".
This phenomenon is not limited to Yahoo Answers either. Lots of signs and notes in China use "English" that looks like it's been copied straight from an automatic translation.
Do these people actually believe that automatic translations work?!|||Some people actually do. However, they are ignorant and extremely stupid and it's sad that they'd even attempt to answer a translation question when they have no knowledge of the language. I usually deal in Chinese, French, German and English Grammar questions in languages. When I do answer these questions, I always double-check my answer and only attempt to answer questions at a level that I can deal with. Online translators never work because they take no context into account which is what language is all about. How are they meant to know the difference between 'fly' the verb and 'fly' the noun? Always use a human and don't be lazy! Sadly, I think few will look at your question and even fewer the answers here.|||do u mean like, when the translators just make boxes?|||haha...yeah apparently
but automatic translations are helpful when you know NOTHING from the language and are just trying to get an idea of what is said.|||They do work, just not that well. You have to translate it, then interpret what it gives you. For one word it's perfectly accurate. Or, if you're translating something you don't know into a language you do know, it works, because you can interpret it.|||They work but only up to a point are not of course a substitute for human translation. We can all look up foreign words in a dictionary but if you speak a foreign language you don't just translate one word at a time. There is syntax grammar and idiom to take account of.A robot translator may be able to give you the gist but human intervention cannot be circumvented.
If you are totally bored one night try putting some English into a robot tranlslator to produce say Polish or whatever THen reverse the process and see how accurate or hilarious the result is.|||Unfortunately, I think some people really don't know. They've never stopped to think about whether or not you can just take words from one language and substitute them with words from another... To them, translation is just changing the words.
I'm a professional translator and I've had to redo entire texts because the previous version had been translated online.
All you'd have to do is take a chunk of text from another language and plug it in to see how it looks in your language; I mean, you should have a small doubt that perhaps this wouldn't work that well. Otherwise, why would there be people working as translators?!?|||i know they don't.
i know my language skills aren't great, but i've noticed tranlators mess up grammar 1/2 the time and almost always mix up homophones. and if it's not perfectly spelled, the tranlator won't get it.
i never sugest using one, and i use them to check my spelling, and as a dictionary for a words i'm not sure on(and then i use logic for that too)|||The answer must be yes.
A lot of people do use them and cite them in Yahoo answers.
They can't all be liars.

Why does google chinese translation pop up when im writing emails? PLEASE HELP!?
When I am writing e-mails in Firefox a little google translation thingy pops up next to my words and makes it very difficult to get anything done. I try to go to option for the toolbar by right clicking on it, and EVERYTHING on the menu is in Chinese. I tried clicking random stuff in the menu hoping one would be exit, but I just end up opening up crazy google.cn searches.
why is google being such a bastard?|||Not sure, but I suspect you have some adware on your machine, probably (just a guess) from China. You might want to run some anti-malware scans.
If you have an anti-virus, make sure it has the latest virus definitions and run a scan with it in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. That often prevents malware from protecting itself. If you don鈥檛 have one, many people here swear by AVG (it鈥檚 free).
I suggest you also download Ad-Aware 2008 and Spybot S%26amp;D (they鈥檙e free), install them, update them and run them. If any of the above (or any anti-malware, for that matter) doesn鈥檛 seem to be able to run properly or get rid of everything it reports finding, try running it again in Safe Mode.
Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.
To get into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking:
1.Log out and reboot your machine.
2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3.Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.
4.Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.
5.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.
6.When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.
Note that even if the anti-malware programs get rid of the malware, they may not be able to reverse the effects. Search the Web for possible fixes.
Update and run everything regularly, not just when you think you already have malware.
Good luck.

What is a good site to use for translations?
I have used google translate and no its not a good site to use. It sucks, it gets them almost all wrong, and now I have to start over on my French Dialogue|||Unfortunately for you, free online translators are simply not capable of translating accurately 100% of the time - indeed, 90% of the time, their translations are crap, although they are improving with user input. However -- translating full sentences may be a bit much for a translator on the internet, but going word by word is not. If you're familiar with basic grammar and know what tense you should be using (you can also find charts of conjugations and tenses on http://french.about.com/ by searching a query such as "____ conjugations") then you should be able to get pretty far with the magic of the internet.
That being said, I think you'll regret it a few years from now if your French education is not solid and has no foundation, because you did all of your assignments with a translator. Also, what you're doing is academically dishonest -- cheating. Being bilingual is very helpful, and if you're struggling in French, I recommend getting a textbook and taking 20 minutes each day to work forward bit by bit. I guarantee that you wouldn't regret it.
Good look with your French Dialogue.|||Your brain.

Are machine translations a threat to foreign language translation professionals?
My friends and I used to laugh so hard at the ridiculous translations generated by Babelfish.
However, this morning, I ran some Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper articles through Google Translations and was genuinely shocked at how much better machine translation has become over the past ten years! The translations are often so accurate, a human is only required to proofread the output!
Is this going to result in vastly fewer jobs for translators? And will it make the translator's job considerably more tedious? It sounds to me that the thrill of translating will be cut out, leaving only tedious "what the heck does this word mean" obscure expression-finding...
Is this an accurate view of what is going to happen to traditional, manual translations?|||From completing an internship at Veritas Language Solutions in Swansea - a translation and interpreting company I would argue that human translators are still the only way to get large chunks of language translated accurately.
While online translators have improved over the years , I've found them to still make very basic errors as well as major errors which could go unnoticed. I think translators jobs are definitely safe for the forseeable future as they are still much more accurate and are more likely to use sophisticated language and colloquial terms essential for good translations.|||Machine translators can only ever go so far. Inputting something such as a newspaper article into a translator would heed much better results because it is written formally, simply, and as grammatically correct as possible. But the majority of works outside of newspaper articles are not, and will contain slang and unique spoken varieties that machine translators cannot understand and who will always be "behind the times" on.
Not only that, but machine translations will always lack the most important thing that comes with translation: the ability to understand subtle nuances. Machine translators are built to try their very best at literally translating something, and when they cannot tackle it to skip it. Machines cannot comprehend the metaphoric meanings of the original author, nor can they offer proper equivalents of any idioms to the other language.
Humans will always have the upper hand where language is concerned because you cannot program into a machine the things necessary to be able to understand what is implied, but not spoken outright.|||At this stage human translators are still more then welcomed. But, in the future, as you say, machines might take over (still with the assistance of humans).
Still, as far as translating books (high quality literature, poetry, plays, etc) and all translations where there is a need for a broader culture and knowledge (a requirement a good translator must have) machines won't be able to take over. So,I guess, only the best will survive!|||The thrill of translating will only grow. All the routine technical work will be minimized with the help of machine translation. But the real translation work - the art part rather than the craft one will always be handled by talented human translators

Google translate function I can not find. In the past when I was reading any website, google would translate the words into a foreign language (Spanish, Italian, ect)

How to translate an entire web page on Google translate service?
A paragraph can be translated on Google translate and they also had the facility of translating a whole web page but these days I've noticed that when a url is pasted on the appropriate place to translate it doesn't do anything but says again that paste url for translation.
Have they disabled this service of a web page translation? If not then please tell me hoe to translate the whole page. Also suggest me some other translation sites. Thanks a lot.|||Step 1
First, try the Google Translation service. You can visit http://translate.google.com and enter any block of text into the box to have it translated into another language. The default setting is from Spanish to English, but if you click on the buttons you will find drop-down menus that allow you to choose different "to" and "from" languages. If you want to translate an entire web page, just enter the URL (by copying it from your address bar) into the appropriate section and then clicking on the "translate" button.
Step 2
For more language options, try Yahoo's tool at http://babelfish.yahoo.com. The page looks more complicated than the Google tool, but it has the same functionality, meaning that you can translate blocks of text and entire web pages.
Step 3
Try searching the internet for foreign websites using the new words you've learned. You can draw from a global knowledge base while researching for your term paper or article.
Hope it helps you. For more information http://www.iyogi.ca

Why do people answer questions from Google Translator?
I think if people wanted the Google Translator to tell them they would look it up themself easily. Google Translator is hard to get an accurate translation unless you are familiar with the language already.|||haha! I was just about to ask this question.
They think they are 'trying to help' when in fact they don't have a clue how inaccurate Google Translate is and are only just confusing the asker. Probably just doing it to get their 2 points - stupid really, I don't see the point in answering if they don't even know the answer.
Also, I love the way they're usually very condescending about it as well - 'Oh well, you could've just used Google Translate if you weren't so lazy!' - just no! Bye !|||Power of gilded marble
The gilded age was one of unrivalled opulence, an age of castles transported from Europe, four-hundred-foot yachts, and the great American family fortunes. Society was decorous, strict, and entirely stratified. Above all, it had but one leader, Mrs. Astor. It was she whom with the help of her friend and social confidant Ward McAllister, decided who was, and who was not, a member of Society-- a group limited to four hundred by the confines of the Astor mansion's stately ballroom.
Four years the press clamored to know who the Four Hundred were, who comprised the inner sanctum of Gilded Age Society? Mrs. Astor never in her life spoke with a journalist, but Ward McAllister often did. Famous for his flippant remarks and unwavering loyalty to Mrs. Astor and Society, he leaked the list to the New York Times in 1892. Instantly the term, "The Four Hundred," entered the national vocabulary, as a way to describe New York's hereditary elite: the Vanderbilts, the Van Rensselaers, the Goelets, the Stuyvesant Fish, the Chanlers....
Jerry E. Patterson, social historian and widely published author, brings the names on McAllister's list to life. Describing their lineage, wealth, exploits, and amusements, Patterson paints a vivid and remarkably human portrait of Gilded Age Society at its peak. In telling the story of the First Four Hundred, Patterson details the composition and lore of New York Society from the time the early Dutch settlers first broke bread through the Gilded Age and into the early part of the twentieth century. This telling history of New York's very rich is as much a history of the city itself as it is of social customs, dynamics, idiosyncrasies, and private architecture
Kinda like King Midas... Everything he touched turned to gold but he paid dearly in the end.|||No, it's not a saying in Dutch. I think it should read vergulde instead of vergulden, and then it would mean 'the power of the gilded marble' (marble being a little glass ball boys play with).

How does the google language translator work?
The google translator translates sentences from one language to another (though the translation is not always correct). I would like to know how it works. Whether it has a database of all the words in all the supported languages with their corresponding meanings? Or if it uses some other mechanism or perhaps an algorithm for the translation.|||It's statistically-based machine translation[1]. Read all about that in Wikipedia[2].
My take on the articles is this: There is a special database of documents[2] that are translated into various languages--a really big Rosetta stone. The phrase to be translated is located in a document of the source language then cross-referenced to the various translations in the target language. Of the various possible translations, statistical analysts is used to determine which to use. Grammar and other elements of language are considered in the analysis.
What follows is a quote from the beginning of Wikipedia's description of the basis of statistically-based machine translation. After the quote, it gets very involved in information theory:
"The idea behind statistical machine translation comes from information theory. A document is translated according to the probability distribution p(e | f) that a string e in the target language (for example, English) is the translation of a string f in the source language (for example, French)."

You need professional translator or linguist. They will guide you through correct translation according to many factors your book holds.
How do you write indestructible in Greek?
How would you write indestructible in Greek? Is 维蠁胃伪蟻蟿慰蟼 correct? It's something I'm considering for a tattoo.

Can anyone help translate the following Chinese into English?
1.閫犲闆勫
Please don't bother with google translations - thanks.|||閫犲闆勫 = Describes a person's great ability to create vivd images via art or poetry.
http://www.google.com.sg/search?hl=en%26amp;sa鈥?/a>
Just a simple check on google will show that 閫犲闆勫 is NOT meaningless.
Btw Dr. Jellyfish, are you trying to translate the following article? I made a check using the words you have asked so far and this popped-up.
http://www.nmh.gov.tw/zh-tw/History/Cont鈥?/a>|||Hello, as you just asked a question about Zhang Daqian. I would assume this phrase is about arts as well.
"閫犲", from a direct translation, means "make the environment like a real one"
"闆勫" means Magnificent and unusual.
The whole phrase should mean some one did some art (probably a painting) magnificently and unusual, make it like a real one.
It would be best if you could give me the whole sentence, so I can translate over the context|||Happy Holidays! ^_^
I see that you have posted a couple of questions while i was outta town :p
Anyway, here goes...
閫?- to create
澧?- place (e.g. 浠欏), border , boundary (杈瑰), situation (鍥板), a level (澧冪晫)
闆勫 - Magnificent, Grand, Fancy or Unusual
In this case, i'd say 閫犲闆勫 is "Create(d) a Magnificent scene/place"
Hope this is helpful.|||This is my guess:
To make a place powerfully wonderful.|||make the world a better place
