Does Babelfish or Google Translate work for translating similar languages?

I know from experience when translating say for example English to Spanish,

it doesn't really make much sense when translating anything lengthy. English %26lt; %26gt; German worked better, although not great.

But what about e.g Spanish %26lt; %26gt; Portuguese, Russian %26lt; %26gt; Ukrainian .etc

How accurate is it? in terms of grammar and mistranslations.

If you have used 2 closely related languages in translation tools, what did you think?|||I've noticed that translating English to Romance languages and vice versa tends to work quite well. I still wouldn't try to pass it off as a human translation though.

Languages that are extremely different than English, like Chinese and Japanese, produce hilarious results.|||Better than dissimilar ones, but not completely reliable, either.|||Don't even trust the translations on google or babelfish lol|||Not reliable. I tell my students not to even bother. It's obvious every time.|||it doesn't work that well....it's the same thing|||Yes i have found it to do quiet well
