Please help with German to English translation of just two sentences?

Here they are:

Wie war die Temperatur? Sie war sehr hoch.

Thank you for any non-google translation you can render.|||How was the temperature? It was very high.

Temperature is a female noun, so when you use a pronoun to refer to it, it has to be "sie", but that still translates to "it" in English, since inanimate nouns don't have gender in that language.|||I'm a little confused by it but I think it means "How was the temperature? She was very high."

Sie can mean she/they/or you (formal) however war as the verb suggests "she"...to me it would make more sense if it said Es war sehr hoch. Meaning It was very high.|||How was the temperature? It was very high.
