The sentence is 'However, it brightened up and we were able to sunbathe on the beach and get a tan.'|||I have always used 'pourtant' in French tests and I've never been marked wrong.|||(1) Get yourself a good printed dictionary. I find the "Concise Oxford / Hachette" quite adequate. It, like most good dictionaries, has a full table of verb conjugations, regular and irregular.
(2) If you really want to understand the art of idiomatic translating, get yourself a copy of "Stylistique compar茅e du fran莽ais et de l'anglais" by Vinay and Darbelnet (Paris, Didier, 1958, revised 1977): it will tell you everything they never taught you at school..
(3) "However" has various meanings, but the translation that comes first to mind for me is "N茅anmois" meaning "all the same, nevertheless."
In the sense of "however big," "however expensive" etc., try "quelles que soient les dimensions", "quel que soit le prix," etc.|||however :
